Scrubs Car Detailing

Scrubs Car Detailing mockup advertisement poster and logo design as part of a design assignment

Software

Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Excel

The purpose of this design assignment was to simulate real-world design work for a client, requiring the creation of a new logo and poster. These designs would introduce an established business to retired luxury car owners. To ensure the poster could be printed, the document's colour space was set to CYMK rather than the digital RGB format. The project also involved developing a modern new logo for the business to convey a fresh and updated brand image. To simulate a professional working environment, a gantt chart was created to manage the project's progress throughout its development. The final result showcases the successful execution of a comprehensive and well-planned design project.

When designing an advertisement poster for print, it's essential to use a CMYK colour profile to ensure that the colours on the final product appear as intended. CMYK is a colour model used in the printing industry to achieve a wide range of colours using the four inks of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. CYMK creates colours by subtracting light from white paper, whereas RGB creates colours by adding red, green, and blue light. CMYK as opposed to RGB, is specifically used for printing on physical surfaces such as paper or vinyl. While designing for the purpose of print, working with RGB would result in inaccurate colours.

This project revolves around redesigning Scrubs' business logo and poster to give a fresh look while keeping the original blue and black colours. Leveraging Adobe Illustrator's vector tools would produce high-quality designs that can be printed. Additionally, the client requested to replace the existing motto of "Damn good car detailing" with a more positive one. The project also encountered some hurdles, such as the need to remove the original logo and motto from the images provided for use. Despite these challenges, the final result met the client's requirements successfully.

The design process for this project started with thorough research of the car detailing industry to gather inspiration and identify key concepts and icons associated with the business. One intriguing design was an orange car-washing poster that featured a circular element that could serve as the location for the new logo. Based on the client's preferences and insights gained from this research, preliminary sketches were created to map out the overall layout of the advertisement poster, including the placement of essential details like reviews, business information, and promotional offers. Additionally, the logo was conceptualised after examining luxury car steering wheels, such as those used in Ferrari cars, to produce a sleek and sophisticated look.

To ensure the client's requirements were met, a Gantt chart was created to schedule all aspects of the project, including client communication, design, and revisions based on feedback. The chart provided an estimate of the hours required to complete the project, which was necessary to provide a quote to the simulated client. As part of the assignment, the client also requested a detailed letter of advice on how the designs would appeal to their target audience. The project's ultimate goal was to create a 610mm x 914mm poster to introduce the business's new logo, which updates its appearance.

The development process of the Scrubs Car Detailing project started with the creation of a new logo. The logo design involved sketching and researching Ferrari steering wheels, which inspired the logo's shape. Half the logo was drawn using Adobe Illustrator's pen tool, which was later mirrored and merged to ensure symmetry. The client also required the new logo to maintain their original brand colours of blue and black. The font selection of Homecoming and DIN added a sophisticated touch to the logo design while retaining the original design's essence.

Next, to design the advertisement poster, the initial layout sketched earlier was recreated with some adjustments to fit the required dimensions better. As Scrubs Car Detailing is an appointment-based business, their business hours couldn't be used on the poster, so instead, the phrase "We Come to You!" was utilised. The image at the top of the advertisement matched the header from their website, but it featured the old logo and motto that needed to be replaced. To address this issue, the image was edited in Adobe Photoshop to remove the unwanted space by filling it with a gradient that matched the reflection of the original image. The result was successful, with the new logo replacing the old one and the phrase "We Come to You!" becoming the new motto for the business.

In summary, redesigning Scrubs Car Detailing's logo and poster for this simulated assignment has given the Australian business a fresh new look that will appeal to luxury car owners. A success in the project was the font used in the logo for "Car Detailing". It is easily recognisable to Australian customers as it is widely used for road signs, adding familiarity to the design while subconsciously pairing the design with cars. However, there was a challenge during the project, as Adobe Illustrator was not exporting the JPEG of the poster in the correct dimensions. It was overcome with the simple solution of exporting it as an EPS, a high-quality format, and cropping it in Adobe Photoshop. To improve in future, when editing details like placing the updated logo on the car back panel, utilising tools like the warp perspective tool in Photoshop would make it look more natural. Overall, the project was completed ahead of schedule, and the client was pleased with the final result, as evidenced by the updated Gantt chart.
